In the early years of Fun-Schooling there was a lot of stress involved–not for the kids, but for me. I was creating a custom curriculum for each child based on their personality, passions, and my goals for their development.
I needed a way to create structure with flexibility! So I designed the first Core Curriculum Journal! I filled it with activities and learning prompts that inspired academic learning based on each child’s passions, while building in a rhythm of balancing learning, fun, creativity, logic, and imagination. We used a variety of techniques as philosophies of education that lend themselves well to my Do-It-Yourself model.
The math was there. The science was there. The spelling, history, geography, social studies and skill building… they were still there! Everything was covered, but it was fun for the kids because the curriculum was designed to help them go deep into their passions and interests! Maria, Charlotte, Jon, Edith and Jim Weiss were there too!!! And in the end each child had created a beautiful portfolio of their personal education journey within the organization of the Core Journal!
Now eight of my children are adults, calm, cool, confident, creative, innovative, intelligent and industrious! I look back over the learning journey and reflect. In the middle of developing the Fun-Schooling Method I was a little scared; but the joy and peace I experienced in our home and in my vibrant and fun relationship with each child told me I was doing something right!
