What to do if there isn’t a journal about what your child wants to study

This comes up frequently in our Facebook group. Someone’s child wants to study X subject, but we do not have a themed journal based on that subject.

Here are a few thoughts and options-

  • Students do not need a themed journal. When we first started making journals, they were all generic. All they need is the books, podcasts, internet, documentaries, etc. and a journal to document their learning.
  • Core journals are specifically designed for students to study any subject in the world. Yes, some are themed. Most are not.
    AND just because a student has a themed core journal, it doesn’t mean they have to only study the topic of that journal- or even study anything based on that journal at all! We have had a student use a horse core journal to study technology. Another student used the Songwriters journal to study theater.

  • Many single-subject journals can be adapted to study a wide range of topics.
    For example, use white out tape to cover the headlines in Past Times History and your student can write news articles on any topic they want- or use it for written narration and/or general documentation of their learning.
    Alternatively, use the blank side of the Brain Games page for notes – some students find this approach particularly effective, alternating brain breaks with a Brain Games page and writing their school notes on the other side. We’ve ever had students create their own journal pages on these blank pages!
  • Our Reading Time journal and Master Class are set up to be used for studying any topic without as many subjects as a Core Journal
  • Use one of our blank journals- we have several that are completely blank inside. I will post their cover images and links below. Your student can decorate the cover to make it be about their topic of study!

How to Transform Your Homeschool: Perfectionism to Joy

Homeschool moms! Let’s throw our stress overboard! Let’s release the things that cause stress! Let’s set ourselves (and our kids) free from unreasonable and irrational expectations. Somehow, we imagined that these unrealistic goals were the right way.
Untangle yourself and your kids from the things that choke out the joy in learning!
Here’s how:
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to take their thoughts captive and release burdens that were never meant to be theirs to carry. As homeschooling parents, we often focus on academic achievement, but if we aren’t careful, we can unintentionally plant seeds of anxiety, perfectionism, and self-doubt in our children’s hearts.
God never intended for us to live weighed down by fear or the need to perform for approval. Matthew 11:28-30 reminds us to come to Jesus for rest, and 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive in obedience to Christ. These truths are not just for us as parents—they are essential for our children as they grow into the people God created them to be.
So how do we weave these lessons into our homeschool days?


The Hidden Burden of Traditional Schooling
In many educational settings, children are trained to work for grades, external approval, and the fear of making mistakes. Every assignment is graded, every test has red marks, and progress is often measured by how few errors they make rather than how much they have learned.

When children are constantly evaluated this way, they internalize a dangerous belief: “I am only as good as my ability to get things right.”

This burden is heavy, and I’ve seen how it plays out in adulthood. It creates individuals who are afraid to take risks, explore new ideas, or step into their God-given creativity. Instead of growing into confident problem-solvers, they become people-pleasers, perfectionists, or those who avoid challenges altogether because they fear failure.
When I was young, I struggled with traditional academics. I saw myself as someone who wasn’t smart enough, always focusing on my weaknesses rather than my gifts. I even failed third grade!!!
But when I embraced learning on my own terms (at age 13) following my curiosity, using creativity, and celebrating progress instead of perfection—I discovered a love for learning that has lasted a lifetime. This is the heart of Fun-Schooling.

How Fun-Schooling Releases Burdens
Fun-Schooling is not about performance—it’s about passion, mastery, and lifelong learning. Instead of burdening our children with the fear of failure, we give them the tools to learn with confidence and joy.
In our home and in thousands of Fun-Schooling families, kids don’t study to earn grades or please a teacher. They study to pursue knowledge, build skills, and prepare for the future God has for them.

Understanding Super-Creators: How to Nurture Your Child’s Creative Spirit

I’ve written before about super-creators, but I think it’s important to remember just what a super-creator is, and how to nurture your super-creator child! Two of my kids are super-creators — they’re driven by a powerful internal vision of what they want to make and are laser-focused on bringing that vision to life! They often resist learning anything unless it directly serves their creative goals, and struggle with learning by lecture or lessons directed by another person.

A super-creator doesn’t just want to create — they almost need to create. Their journey is deeply personal and non-negotiable, with anything that interferes with their creative process which is seen as a roadblock or a threat. Some projects take hours, others years, but their focus remains unwavering! It’s this determination that I find so admirable! These children have a vivid mental picture of the end result and seem to work backward, figuring out the steps needed to make that vision real. Often, what they imagine is far beyond their current abilities, but they’re not deterred!

Super-creators are deeply absorbed in their work, and anything they perceive as unrelated to their goal can feel like a distraction. If parents or teachers try to divert their attention, they can become disengaged or resistant. However, when adults come alongside them, supporting the process without taking over, the results can be incredible!

Too often, our culture tries to mold super-creators into obedient, “well-behaved” students, thinking we’re teaching discipline. In doing so, we risk stifling their natural gifts. Super-creators are rare, and if you have one, you’ve been entrusted with something truly special — a rainbow unicorn!

Four Grade Levels in One Year: Former Foster Child Finds Success and Confidence with Dyslexia Games

Eight-year-old Kassidy faced significant challenges with reading and learning in the public school environment. Thanks to Dyslexia Games, she’s at grade level and bursting with newfound confidence.

“She was eight years old when she came into our family,” says Jill Cain, adoptive mother of former foster child Kassidy. “It was a night and day difference between her and my biological children. She didn’t know letter sounds, but she could read some sight words, which didn’t make sense to me. There were other things too; it was like a jumbled puzzle that didn’t add up.”

Jill homeschools her biological children, but because Kassidy was a foster child at the time, she had to be in public school. The school provided her with a personal aide for an hour each day, but it didn’t help. Jill suspected dyslexia, but the school didn’t agree and passed Kassidy to the next grade, even though she couldn’t read.

The Emotional Toll

“When it came time for school or homework, she was completely shut down. She would cross her arms and not even try,” remembers Jill. “And when she did try, it was tears.”

Jill finally convinced the school to test Kassidy, and a dyslexia diagnosis was confirmed. She also convinced the school to hold her back the next school year to give her more time to learn and catch up with her peers. In the meantime, Jill researched dyslexia resources online.

Making matters worse, Kassidy was bullied at school. “The experience in public school greatly affected her,” laments Jill. “Her self-confidence was so low and it affected our relationships. She was very isolated.”

Fighting for a Fair Chance

In Jill’s online research, she stumbled upon Dyslexia Games by Sarah Janisse Brown. It looked promising, but Jill wondered if it would help Kassidy learn. “I knew she was bright and capable as she excelled in so many other areas,” notes Jill. “But how do I even do this, if the public school can’t do it?”

She decided to shelve her doubts, but the next step was for Jill to get legal permission to homeschool Kassidy. “I went all the way to the top,” she says. It took time, but finally, they were granted permission, and their homeschooling journey began.

Jill initiated some “deschooling” time first to give Kassidy a chance to decompress and build confidence and security. Then, when she felt like Kassidy was ready, she started her on just one page a day in Dyslexia Games.

 “It really drained her,” notes Jill. “It was completely exhausting to do one page. There were days she just wanted to bail, and I was unsure whether this was the right way to proceed because we didn’t see any progress.”

Breakthrough! Four Grade Levels in One Year

Persistence paid off. After about three weeks, Jill observed the first signs of improvement. When she pointed out something that needed correction, Kassidy figured it out herself. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh! This is working!’” Jill exclaims.

That was just the encouragement they both needed to keep going. As they progressed through the program, Kassidy experienced several more breakthrough moments in letter recognition, reading skills, and math skills.

“She had about a six-month jump in math in six weeks, that I just can’t explain except for Dyslexia Games,” Jill adds.

Jill turned the reins over to Kassidy, who began doing several pages a day. By the end of Dyslexia Games, Series B, she was reading at a 4th-grade level, representing a jump of four grade levels in one year.

Kassidy’s confidence soared. “We’re a read-aloud family,” says Jill. “We go around the room and read aloud. Before, she would refuse. Now she will read an entire chapter!”

Unlocking Potential: How Dyslexia Games Transformed Learning for a South African Family

When traditional schooling failed her son and the pandemic forced shutdowns, Clerissa Kritzinger turned to homeschooling, which ignited a love of learning in her family.

“I was at my wit’s end,” Clerissa Kritzinger recalls. “We had tried everything the traditional system offered, but nothing seemed to work. The tension in our relationship was palpable.”

Clerissa’s journey began with her oldest son’s struggles in school. Despite various therapies and medications for his ADHD diagnosis, his situation didn’t improve. 

The Kritzingers moved Anthony to a tutoring center, hoping that a smaller environment with more one-on-one attention would make a difference. Then facing pandemic-related school closures, Clerissa found herself alone with her son’s reading difficulties.

A Turning Point: Discovering Dyslexia

Homeschooling was not common in South Africa, but with the pandemic, it became a widespread reality. Clerissa found herself with no other choice. She quickly discovered that teachers had been sugar-coating Anthony’s progress, and she was upset. She chose a different curriculum, hoping that would make a difference.

It wasn’t until her friend, Alene, suggested her son might be dyslexic that Clerissa found a new direction. After researching and finding Nessy, a free online dyslexia screening tool, she confirmed her son’s condition. 

“It was a moment of relief and clarity,” she shares. “Finally understanding the cause of my son’s struggles opened up a world of possibilities.”

Slow and Steady: The Impact of Dyslexia Games

“You’ve got to be kidding me. How is my kid going to learn to read by doing pictures?” says Clerissa of the moment she first looked through Dyslexia Games. “It did not make sense to me.”

Alene reminded her that her daughter began reading within three months of using Dyslexia Games. “Just trust the process,” she advised.

So Clerissa plowed ahead with assigning her son two pages a day. She was surprised to see him enjoying the games and asking for more pages. His concentration began to improve. 

Then, a month and a half in, Anthony started to pick out random words during daily activities like grocery shopping or playing a game. At three months, Clerissa introduced a phonics program and he took off with it.

“It was like night and day,” Clerissa explains. “He’s never been depressed since we started homeschooling and using Dyslexia Games. The meltdowns that used to happen every single day at school just stopped. Now, his favorite place is the library.”

The Beautiful, Calming Power of Core Journals

As a homeschooler myself I enjoyed delight-directed learning, library-based homeschooling, unschooling, and lots of unit studies and learning through projects. My education as a homeschooler was fun, but very spontaneous and disorganized at times.

As a homeschool mom, I began to study many philosophies of education and thought I had to pick just one at first. We started with Classical Education and Unit Studies, but that all fizzled out when I started homeschooling my second child who was adyslexic super creator and the third who was a genius type of neurodivergent detective!

By my fourth formal year of homeschooling my 5, 6, 7 and 8 year olds, I had introduced a eclectic array of homeschooling techniques that were inspired by Charlotte Mason, Jon Holt, Maria Montessori, Edith Schaeffer, the Bible, and my mother! All while mixing in the classical techniques that worked well for my oldest son.

People asked us if we were unschoolers, because my children’s activities revolved around their needs, curiosity, passions and childish career dreams. With children these ages, we did so many projects instead of workbooks to understand how the world works… and how to master it!

Combining travel, adventure, nature, real books, art, people and love created the theme of our learning adventure that revolved around three meals a day in a big Victorian house on Main Street. But unlike unschooling, we were seeking organization, a schedule and rhythm to our learning process. We were trying everything and experimenting with everything based on my leadership in the home, while honoring the curiosity of each child. We called it Fun-Schooling.

Today I sit down with my husband Josh, and our sons Isaac and Joe. All three have vastly different reasons for learning and following their passions and interests, but they all have something in common: The WAY they were raised!

Our Approach to Education | The Value of Following Interests and Learning How to Generate Wealth

In our family we approach education from the perspective of helping our kids build their career from the earliest age possible. I’ll share year by year what it looks like:

Ages 2 to 4:

We read stories together about people who do great things.

Ages 5 to 9:

Ages 5 to 9 we help our kids understand that they can create something of value or add value to something to generate wealth. This understanding of the power to create value sparks an entrepreneurial mindset that is the foundation of future success.

Here are ways we did this:

– At age 8 Isaac learned to take 50 cents worth of glass, stone and metal beads, create a bracelet using beautiful designs and color schemes and then sell the bracelets 2 for $15.

At age 10 Isaac learned to use my scroll saw to take $8 worth of pine and turn it into 10 wooden swords that would sell for $10 to $15 each.

-at ages 5, 7 & 9 I got a booth at a winter festival for Leah, Ember and Lilly where they could each sell a their handmade crafts that were perfect stocking stuffers. They each took low cost materials and made a variety of items to sell, they made hundreds of dollars.

– At age 5 Rachel would pick out children’s books at yard sales, usually 10 to 25 cents each, and resell them for $2 to $5 each at a farm store we volunteered to help out with.

– At age 7 Esther had a bath salts business, taking 30 cents worth of salts and essential oils, packaging them up pretty to sell for $4 each.

Ages 9-12

At around age nine the focus of school begins to shift from play, exploring, experimenting, learning to read, and starting tiny businesses to a focus on the child’s passions, hobbies and career dreams.

Whatever each child is passionate we begin to allow them to dive deeply into that passion so they can become experts on the topics they love, and learn relevant skills and knowledge.

We allow them to study and research that passion so diligently that they need to begin using high level learning materials to satisfy the level of curiosity that they develop, often reading adult level materials and getting involved in real world experiences based on their passions. For Laura, at age 11, we built an aviary so she could have a bird sanctuary for her rescued birds. Our son Joseph needed a piano. Our daughter Abby needed a kiln for her pottery hobby. Ember needed a garden. Chrissy needed tons of yarn. I would also participated with the kids in these hobbies and enjoy learning alongside them.

At this point we provide field trips, volunteering opportunities, training and provide the child with a personal library and access to documentaries about that topic. We get them some professional quality tools to help them explore, and lessons if possible.

We focus on basic academic skills related to the child’s passion. This is the model of learning through age 13. The kids are welcome to change their focus as they either spark a new interest (one thing often leads to another, or they get bored because that interest was not really their element.

Ages 13-20

In the early teen years the child is encouraged to embrace a passion and begin to turn it into a career. For their birthday we celebrate the theme related to their career dream. This is the key: the kids know it’s coming!

They know leading up to this day that if they want to start a business they need to propose a vision to us parents and we will spend over $1000 to invest in what they need to launch, and we will pair them up with an apprenticeship, coach, courses, masterclass or trusted friend who had succeeded in the trade or calling they want to pursue.

I have paid $100 a week for private lessons or coaching – one on one from an expert. We do this instead of college, and it’s much more affordable.

Instead of traditional high school math, my kids learn economics, civics, business, marketing, social media skills, consumer and business technology, and leadership. We get their books on these topics at the FedEx office book rack, and we use the Uncle Eric Series by Blue Stocking Press.

Ages 13-18 each of my kids are permitted to let go of any expectations related to education that steal time from their business development, career goals and training. And we don’t give them phones and devices until those things are essential for their business marketing work.

They are not free to use devices in an unlimited way, the devices are locked down to eliminate time wasting behavior, they also have time limits and only run approved apps. The goal is for the teen to not be distracted.

We don’t ever give the kids money or buy them things they want, unless it’s Christmas or a birthday, but even on these days our gifts are empowering and often related to their passion. And now, we give the gift of time.

It has been said that it takes about 10,000 hours to become world class in your trade. Between ages 13 and 18 the kids are diving into their work, business, skill building and experience- and getting in their 10,000 hours.

They get jobs or create jobs to generate funds to support their passions and callings. They often pay for their own mission trips, camps, travel, and such. We often pay for educational expenses.

In my experience they have all built businesses that be one sustainable to support them before age 20. Not only are my children incredibly skilled, they are confident, happy, and live low stress lives with a focus on relationship.

During the teen years we do have required reading for our children, and they participate with the whole family during morning devotions, and social studies discussions, and we eat meals together where we have wonderful conversations.

The older kids help teach the younger ones, and everyone is responsible for different parts of our home, to keep them clean and to contribute at meal times. We give each child a lot of experience learning through hospitality and missions. We also give each child an opportunity to participate in the family business to be able to produce books about their passions and earn some passive income through publishing.

Our kids usually have a major project before graduation that sometimes requires a larger investment, not always. Sometimes they need a setting where they can accomplish their goals. Isaac needed a recording studio and film-making equipment- he generated the income to pay for it at age 17.

Esther wanted the family to move to Hawaii so at age 16 she could launch her photography business in a very strategic way. It worked out!

Anna needed to go to Poland and LA to produce her first album.

Naomi needed us to move to a farm in Indiana where she could get horses.

Rachel and Susie needed us to turn a barn into an art studio.

Laura needed a camera and phone and a job at a bakery at age 15 so she could fund her many travels as a teen travel blogger. The rest of the kids generally didn’t get phones until 17.

In our experience, each child has followed a unique path, based on their own gifts, passions, callings and unique opportunities. We don’t put them on the same track, requiring them all to do the same thing. Each one thrives and shines in their own way, and we are delighted to avoid paying for college! By investing early in their career dreams they are able to become exceptionally skilled and achieve a level of maturity and ability that is not common in today’s teens and young adults. They are capable of supporting themselves while living their dreams, well before their 20’s.

People may think that our methods are expensive or require too many life changing actions.

What this method does not require is the expense of a degree (often $100,000+). We don’t have to send our kids off alone to other states and cities, uprooted from their families, friends, community, church and the lives they have built… to detach completely from the foundation we built in childhood. At college our children are often trained in a pattern of thinking that isn’t congruent to the values of our family, often causing depression, disillusionment and detachment for the young adult.

We will do whatever it takes to build the lives of our children on a strong foundation, and rather than uproot them, we simply provide them with wings, and they can land back at home whenever they desire.

Dear Inquisitive Unschooling Mom…

I’m the creator of the Fun-Schooling books. We are Unschoolers most of the time, but I am always introducing my kids to all sorts of content and we do projects and adventures together a lot. We also enjoy casual Charlotte Mason style learning in seasons where we need more structure. So I have been setting up a buffet of learning through the environment I create for my children to grow up in.

I created these books so the children could create portfolios of research, art, thoughts and discoveries about their passions, while incorporating some academic skill building at the same time. In my books I always focus on the spark of curiosity, the quest for knowledge, the joy of discovery, the adventure of going deeper, and the delight of sharing and using the knowledge and skills we have embraced. I also focus on collaboration and the natural process of nurturing the child’s drive to learn by example.

My role is mostly fulfilled by my example of being a curious, creative, peaceful presence as I pursue my own interests and create a wonderful family environment. We use our Thinking Tree Books after breakfast, chores and family devotions. Our daily time with Fun-Schooling books being open and used as a resource and guide for a learning journey is usually less than two hours, and most of the time the child is following learning prompts related to their passions and then coming back to the journal to document the learning in a way that feels more like journaling and scrapbooking.

Some of my books focus on specific academic skill building in areas of math, language arts and geography, for example. But I always reframe academics as an adventure in discovery or creativity. My math books are all therapeutic, (and fun), and are designed to give children joy and confidence with numbers, while healing some of the trauma. What trauma? All the trauma inflicted by the soul-destroying experiences in early childhood related to typical math problems that 90% of kids probably hate and dread. Most kids grow up thinking they are bad at math and writing. They feel ashamed, bored, and have this cloud of irrelevance surrounding all the monotony of standardized learning.

Typical learning focused almost completely on highlighting what the children missed, messed up, and failed in. They are always judged by the seven mistakes rather than the 1000 things they did well. Standardization in education creates a world of failing perfectionists who feel they will never be enough, never achieve their goals, never satisfy the people they love and respect. This is a sad cycle and our society pays the price, because “perfect” is an impossible illusion that we began striving for at such a young age. Women cry into their pillows every night all over the USA cause they can never be good enough… and it started with their first C- in first grade. They tried so hard and were so excited and curious about learning until they began to experience all the shame of small failures.

I failed 3rd grade, with a report card and little heart stained by Ds and Fs. At age 8 I felt doomed to failure and humiliation forever. I began to dream of a different world where kids like me could just play with animals, do school in the woods, build forts, bake cookies, make fairy villages, create museums, sell art, earn money, publish a newspaper and live in a giant cardboard box painted with daisies in the corner of the living room… and of course go to work with dad at the Space Center or help mom in her art studio. I dreamed a lot about a better way to learn and enjoy every moment of my childhood and my life. I decided I wanted to be a mom, and artist and run maybe a space camp where kids can pretty much go to space at the end of the experience.

The Thinking Tree books are a small part of my vision for creating an incredible life around my kids. But they help us dig deeper and document our learning journey while studying what we love, and a few things that we need. Thinking Tree Books also help a lot of people who live in restrictive states to build an impressive portfolio in an easy and joyful way to satisfy requirements. All our bundles are designed around the needs for grade level learning in charter schools in the state of California, so that even kids in that environment can Fun-School. I hope this gives you a little vision and understanding of what Fun-Schooling is and how it came to be. I wanted to give my 15 kids what I dreamed of when I was stuck in a desk doing third grade…again, imagining a different world. The good news is that I got to homeschool at age 13 and basically enjoyed a path of self directed learning based on my passions, projects and career goals! My parents let me do unit studies about ANYTHING I was interested in, and that was school!
